The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV) started with the merger of two companies: The St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company founded in 1853, and The Travelers Insurance company founded in 1864. Travelers is now the largest US-based insurance company by market value. It is currently the third largest writer of US commercial property causalty insurance. With 14,000 independant agents, Travelers is the second largest writer of personal insurance in the US. Personal insurance includes homeowners insurance, auto insurance and other insurance products for individuals. Travelers reported revenue of $24.7 billion in 2009, with total assets of $109.6 billion.
