In 1927, an insurance agent named Herman Wittwer started the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, an auto insurance company targeting mainly farmers. They later expanded their insurance product offerings. In 1963 Farmers Mutual became American Family Mutual Insurance Company.  Their total revenue for 2008 was over $6.7 billion.

American Family Insurance, sometimes referred to as AmFam, provides insurance in 19 states.  Their product offerings include: term, universal, variable universal, and whole life insurance; personal and business auto insurance, personal umbrella insurance, home insurance; motorcycle, boat, motor home, snowmobile and car insurance; business liability key policy, and business policy package insurance; farm and ranch liability insurance; travel, trip cancellation, and global medical insurance.
